Indian Web Series That Changed How We Watch TV

Updated: Apr 12, 2020

You know you have made your web series successfully to the web if the social media is filled with the memes of your content and t-shirts are being sold with the names based on the characters of your web series. In the world where melodrama is the base of Indian television serials, and most of it annoys the youth of the country, homegrown web series has taken over the pattern how we INDIANS watch television. People wanted an escape, and that has been served freshly to the Indian audiences. Now people rarely open their television sets. Instead, they open their online streaming apps like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Zee5, Hotstar to see what is trending, what is new, or what is popular. Above movies, people now prefer watching web series. Although American web series like Game of Thrones, Friends, Narcos, Suits, etc. have been the trendsetters the homegrown web series are the new trend which the web watchers are looking at. A few of the best of them are: 1) Sacred Games A link in the pasts of the two significant characters leads an honest cop to a gang boss, whose warning spurs the officer on a quest to save Mumbai from an unknown but considerable threat. The Mumbai underworld has always worked well the Indian audience. A sequel was launched on 15th August 2019. 2) Mirzapur The iron-fisted Akhandanand Tripathi is a millionaire carpet exporter and the mafia don of Mirzapur. His son, Munna, is a power-hungry heir who will stop at nothing to inherit his father's legacy. An incident at a wedding procession forces him to meet Ramakant Pandit, and his sons, Guddu and Bablu. It turns into a game of ambition, power, and greed. 3) Inside Edge Inside Edge is the story of the Mumbai Mavericks, a T20 cricket franchise playing in the Powerplay League. Set in a landscape of conflicting interests, where selfishness is almost a virtue, where sex, money, and power are a means to an end, Inside Edge is a story that pulls no punches, minces no words, and takes no prisoners. 4) The Family Man A middle-class man plays as a world-class spy. He tries to balance his family responsibilities with the demands of the special cell of the National Intelligence Agency that he is working for. 5) Breathe Breathe explores the lives of ordinary men faced with extraordinary circumstances. Kabir (Sadh), a brilliant but non-conventional officer of the Crime Branch, puts the pieces together of seemingly unconnected deaths that lead to an unlikely suspect - the affable Danny (R.Madhavan). Kabir will not stop until he cracks the case and delivers justice.

6) Bang Baaja Baarat Two people from very different backgrounds fall in love and decide to get married, but not without their parents' blessings. Three days before the wedding, they introduce each other to their respective parents and the consequences thereof. 7) little things A couple in their 20s navigates the ups and downs of work, modern-day relationships and finding themselves in contemporary Mumbai. 8) Flames A teenage romance from The Timeliners that aims straight from the heart. This web-series is the story of a young love unfolding as a chemical reaction. Also, Flames 2 is out now. 9) Sex Chat with Pappu and Papa A series that delivers information across different sex/sexuality related themes. In a realistic style with a lot of humour. Featuring a curious 7-year-old boy, Pappu - who shoots the most outrageous questions to his Papa, Anand. 10) ladies room A story of two besties and the mental adventures they go through in six different bathrooms over the six-episode series. It is a show about modern young girlfriends struggling to grow up even as they grow old. These girls are mad, bad and completely unapologetic about it! And they boldly take you where no man has gone before.
