Grading should be based on merit, not privilege, and ability. While professors may hold ZOOM classes and believe that their job is done, this is far from the truth. Online education is sabotaging some students' futures. People may compare distance learning and online teaching, but there is a vast difference in both of them as distance education is a choice. Whereas in online training, several students have limited or lack of access to the internet and the quality of technology. Despite knowing the fact, the students with a lack of facilities are graded and evaluated in the same way as more privileged students with access.
Due to the current COVID crisis, families are facing problems like unemployment, low business operations, non-paying tenants, lack of essential home supplies, delay in salary. Yet, the students are made to compete against their classmates.
The inability of students to attend online classes leads to the deterioration of their mental health because of the fierce competition.
A benchmark isn't justified to judge every student for the academic grading because educational experience differs from student to student.
Traditionally, classrooms are equal, fair, and accessible. But online classes are not, and it comes with a backlog of quality, access, privilege, familial conditions, and more. As much as we'd like online courses to simulate real classrooms, this may never be the case.
Online education can not replicate conventional classrooms, so it is immoral to insist that students pay the same exorbitant university rates like that.
Now, coming to the final year students who have worked hard to scale up their grades as per the needs of the industry, to fetch the best college for masters. Questions come in their mind about the effectiveness of online exams and how they are conducted.
So what exactly are online examinations and how are they held, let us hear that from academic expert Mr Rajan Garg "Generally online exams are conducted with the help of Moodle, an app where questions are uploaded, the time limit is set. One needs to start the test as per the time notified, and it automatically ends after the stipulated time. One needs a proper internet connection, a laptop or computer and obviously the ability to type in a QWERTY pad when giving online exams."
Students Perception:
Mousree Das: "As per the current scenario, online exams can stand beneficial for some people, but at the same time, it comes with certain limitations like poor internet connection, lack of privacy at home, and the ability to type fast. The notes that we get from colleges are web materials, and if we refer a part of it in the answers, we can be blamed for plagiarism which does not exist in traditional exams, which is not justifiable."
Shreya Raj:
"Online classes are acceptable because it is the need of the hour, but everything cannot be digitized. Online exams and vivas are completely unjustified because it doesn't provide equal opportunity to every student, which demoralizes the enthusiasm of students; delay in exams are accepted but not inequality."
Abhilipsa Mohanty:
"Being a final year student, my main concern with online exams is the evaluation process. Also, I am very much doubtful regarding the typing speed, as because traditional pen and paper writing comes with certain fluency. Still, typing is not as fluent as writing, which adds to the declining productivity while giving exams."
